Sustainability
Playing our part for the future.
Powering a sustainable and thriving Aotearoa
We're privileged to operate in some of the most beautiful parts of Aotearoa. We work hard to manage our impact on the environment, and the communities we are part of.
Genesis' 2025 Sustainability Framework supports the company strategy, Gen35, which delivers to three impact areas: People, Profit and Planet. Our sustainability goals in turn are aligned to three pillars and underpinned by three principles: partnerships, positive outcomes and place-based (our local communities and environments).
Our goals are aligned to three pillars:
Low-carbon future
Genesis has an important role to play as we help to create a low-carbon future powered by renewable energy. We're working to reduce our emissions and helping our customers to do the same.
More equal society
Genesis supports a fair transition to a low carbon future - through STEM education, pathways to employment, energy wellbeing and warm homes in our communities and we work to develop a healthy, diverse and inclusive workforce for all.
Sustainable business
We aim to be transparent as we work towards our sustainability goals, collaborating in partnership with other leaders to create positive change.
Electrification inspiration
Electrification is about changing the way we power our lives, shifting from fossil fuels – like petrol, diesel, and gas – to using electricity for our cars, homes, and businesses.
Our electrification hub shows you what an electrified life could look like, ways to start switching, and resources and real life stories to help you learn more.
Here are 3 good reasons to start thinking about electrification:
- Save on monthly bills
- Shrink your footprint
- Future-proof your stuff
Protecting and restoring nature
Genesis is privileged to operate in some of Aotearoa New Zealand's most pristine environments. We acknowledge that our assets and their operations have a range of environmental and cultural effects in relation to biodiversity. These effects are managed and mitigated by robust policies and processes we have in place, including our environmental management system and resource consent conditions.
We also support a range of initiatives on top of our consent requirements, from our ten-year plus Whio Forever partnership with the Department of Conservation to enhance the survival of the native blue duck/whio, to our longstanding Kiwi Forever relationship with Ngāti Rangi where high school students attend a week-long leadership in conservation programme, based at Tirorangi Marae.
New Zealand Sustainability Leader of the Year 2025
Genesis is proud to sponsor the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards, Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa, in the Sustainability Leader of the Year 2025 category. We recognise that transforming Aotearoa into a more sustainable nation is a big job, but one that's achievable through collective effort.
Our sustainability champion
We’re celebrating Deborah Manning ONZM, founder of KiwiHarvest, who has just been named New Zealand’s Sustainability Leader of the Year!
Deborah saw a problem – perfectly good food going to waste while people were going hungry – and took action. Since starting KiwiHarvest, she and her team have saved millions of kilos of food from landfill and helped get it to those who need it most.
